Radon-Resistant New Construction
Radon-resistant construction incorporates features intended to reduce radon entry during the construction of a new building. Planning these features before the foundation and slab are complete can be easier than retrofitting a finished building.
Common Radon-Resistant Features
- Gas-permeable layers where appropriate
- Plastic sheeting or vapor barriers
- Sealed foundation openings
- Passive vent piping
- Provision for activating the system if needed
Iowa and Illinois Requirements
State and local construction requirements can change. Iowa implemented a statewide radon-resistant construction requirement for applicable new single- and two-family residential construction beginning July 1, 2026. Illinois also has radon-resistant construction requirements. Verify the current code and project requirements for the specific property.
